The carving at the Elizabeth Pumpkin Wall has more than commenced -- it's almost done, as you can see ahead of the official lighting on Wednesday. Among the carvers Monday night were Hughes (left) and McLean Maddrey of East 8th Street, who fashioned a scary one.

I just read an incredible tribute to your wife on a journalist's blog. It made me smile from ear to ear, because he described, exactly, the woman, friend, and young journalist, I knew in Mobile Alabama 30 years ago. And your comment about her photography skills just added to my pangs of nostalgia. Please tell her hello from me, and let her know I still have a "Why did Lolo and Tom Swim Mobile Bay?" T-shirt.
